Don Imus Makes Racist Comment About Adam "Pacman" Jones

Don Imus Hops Over The Line Yet Again
by 100%InjuryRate 100%InjuryRate
6/23/08

I think anyone who remembers Don Imus getting suspended for calling the Rutgers women's basketball team a bunch of "nappy-headed hoes" figured that after he got back on the air again, it'd only be a matter of time before he said something dumb again.

And if you had June 23rd marked on you calendar, then you win a prize.

Imus today had what I'd call a very questionable comment when he was talking about Pacman Jones today on the air.
Newsreader Charles Warner Wolf: ...[H]e's been arrested six times since being drafted by Tennessee in 2005...

IMUS: What color is he?

Wolf: ...He's African-American

IMUS: Well. There you go. Now we know.

After Imus says that, Wolf seems to instantly do what he can to change the subject before Imus says something even more questionable.

Now, I'll just say this. When Imus called the Rutgers women's basketball team nappy-headed hoes, the team at least had several white women on it so you could make the rather poor argument that Imus' comments were just ridiculously poor humor - even though we all knew what he meant.

Here, however, it seems pretty clear what Imus is suggesting. In fact, I'd argue this is actually worse than the Rutgers comment, even though I realize to some people this comment might be open to interpretation.

Also, as user forrest_viv points out in the hotlinks section, Imus probably won't get in as much trouble over this because of Pacman's sordid past. Regrettably, I'd have to agree.

If the average person was to say this, it could be looked at that they were saying African-Americans get targeted by the cops. No body has any reason to think that when this man says it.

I haven't heard the whole interview yet, but I hope that is what he was trying to say.

Sorry...there is nothing here.

Unlike the Rutgers incident of April, 2007, Imus didn't utter "The N-word" or anything else objectionable here.....

To my ears, he asked Warner Wolf about Pacman's color, then said what he said to highlight the MEDIA'S constant negative {and deservedly so} reporting about Jones...that THE MEDIA'S highlighted each legal or financial problem because Jones is black....isn't that a possibility?  Or are most people's minds made up in advance?

If you listened to the program in context, Imus gave a rather lamentable defense of Jones' prior problems {Bad move there, Don}, then went on with the exchange above.

I just hope WABC/Citadel Broadcasting has more stones than the pathetic CBS Radio & NBC Universal.

I agree, 100% injury fan. Imus is a bitter, crusty man who should retire to the ranch in New Mexico. I have not listened to him for years.

Imus is an idiot...but we have to ask the question, is what he said any worse than what jemele hill said about Boston fans? They're both morons who don't deserve to have jobs in the media as far as I'm concerned. We all know what's going to happen, he's going to get raked over the coals because he's white, and she got a "Slap on the wrist" because she's Black. My point...the punishment should be the same.

Well let's be honest the man has said worse off comments. Yes it's inappropriate to some degree but I believe he was making an argument for Packman being targeted because of that reason. Regardless the only people who listen to him and follow him have heard worse so it is just the media making a big deal out of this because it has to do with race. The only reason it is on here is because it was about an athlete. Otherwise the controversey wouldnt show its face to the public that dont listen to him. I'm not backing him up btw. I dont listen to him for several reasons.
