Jim Edmonds Headed to the Cubs

Jim Hendry Believes the Cubs Are Lacking Some Needless Diving Catches In the Outfield
by CriticalFanatic

In the current landscape of sports where players never stick with a team for their entire career, every fan is faced with the same reality - there's bound to be a player you hate that winds up on your favorite team.

This has happened to me with Dennis Rodman, Jalen Rose, Jamal Crawford and most recently, Joakim Noah joining the Bulls. Today it appears this will happen again with Jim Edmonds all but claimed and signed off waivers by the Chicago Cubs.

No Cubs fan wants a former St. Louis Cardinal, and in particular, one that caused Cubdom a great deal of grief. Edmonds was a great defensive player, but his needless diving to make a catch look more spectacular always tired on me.

This waiver claim could have been tolerated a little better three-four years ago when Edmonds was always clutch. Now, the former Cardinal center fielder wasn't needed on one of the worst teams in Major League Baseball. He was 16-for-90 with the Padres (.170) and while he's been labeled a clubhouse guy, he's also rubbed many players the wrong way.

The Cubs sit atop the NL Central with a 23-16 record. Is this worth the risk, and sending young talent Felix Pie down again to AAA without giving him consistent time at the plate?

Since I'm not accustomed to the Cubs winning this much in the first two months I have to say no on the deal. Why mess with what's going on right now? If you're going to add someone, add a starting pitcher.

This will be a tough pill to swallow, but like most sports fans, I'll probably get over it really quickly with a game winning home run.

Who was the player you hated the most that eventually joined your favorite team?

A solid veteran on the end of a bench who will rarely play but is a great locker room presence.  Don't see the problem.  Or why this is on the front page.

Hey I like Jim Edmonds, any dude who will roll with his family to shop at Old Navy while his foot was still in a boot can't be all bad, or can he???? Look the Cubs have been trying to fill the hole of outfielders making needless diving catches ever since the Sarge left. But Edmonds can't make routine fly balls into adventure like Gary Matthews Sr.

Now for players I hated joining my teams:

Albert Belle, Jose Canseco and A.J. joining the White Sox - I am still floored on how well Albert played in Chicago and that he was not the problem in the White Sox clubhouse cough . . . cough . . Frank Thomas. . . cough.

Neil Smith, Bill Romanowski and Dale Carter becoming a Broncos - One ended up being as pleasant surprise, one was roided up and the other was a freaking delinquent (great call on that one Mike)

Karl Malone becoming a Laker. - I blame you Karl and your bad Karma for not winning in 2003-04.

Edmonds a Cub, huh?  I wouldn't be surprised if the pinstripes fell off of the uniform the first time he puts it on.

I wasn't exactly a big Saban fan before he came to Alabama.  And I'm sure as soon as he leaves, he will find his custom place in my sea of hatred.  Until then, Saban is awesome!!!

double whammy: Deion Sanders on the Braves AND the Redskins.

Maybe Edmonds will produce more in a stadium he is more familiar with.

She's not going to have to look very far. She can take a walk on Michigan Avenue and spend wheelbarrows full of money if she wants.

Hey....I like the move, for many reasons:

- Pie still needs more work.     His swing is too slow, has a little hitch at the start, and he's constantly behind the pitch.     I'd like to see him open up his stance a bit - move his left foot closer to the plate and hold the bat higher to avoid the hitch.

- Johnson & Edmonds will make a fairly good platoon system (righty/lefty)

- Edmonds though, REALLY needs to go to a lighter bat.     The past few years, the high fastball that he used to crush has been getting by him.    A lighter bat would help, as would not trying to pull everything to right field.

- Edmonds will help provide some additional leadership, won't complain about playing time, and will be someone that Sweet Lou will be able to count on to help out any of the younger players.

- Edmonds could also fill in at first base too; certainly an upgrade defensively over Ward, not to mention the ability to play either corner outfield spot.     Plus, he knows Wrigley pretty darn well already !

- San Diego is picking up his base salary, so the Cubs are only liable for the prorated minimum.

(And yes....I do coach baseball !!    Hence the player breakdowns !!)

All in all, I don't see too many issues with this at all.      Plus, if (when) the Cubs keep winning....it'll be all good at Clark & Addison !!!

I don't see Pie,Murton, or Ward hitting so what do you got to lose by signing Edmonds.  He's proven time and time again he can get the job done on both sides.

I like Edmonds ever since he was with the Angels. Now the guy has lost a step but let's face it, Edmonds is not Scott Rolen, a guy who had the same rep with the Cards (and Phils for that matter too).

I think Jimmy will be able to add some respectability to the Cubs outfield, and besides, players nowadays don't care about tradition. Just look at Wade Boggs, Johnny Damon, and Roger Clemens.  They jumped BoSox ship to the dreaded Yanks and they don't feel any different about it.
