K-Rod Keeps Blowing Them Away, Still On Record Pace
by Pat Pat
7/21/08

Francisco Rodriguez is saving games at an alarming rate for the Angels. Less than 100 games into the season, K-Rod has already racked up his 40th save. He's on pace for about 65 saves this season, which would completely destroy the season record of 57, set by Bobby Thigpen in 1990.

The Angels finished up the sweep of the Red Sox with some timely hitting in the 8th off of Tim Wakefield and Manny Delcarmen. Wakefield had pitched well through 7 innings, but was roughed up a bit in the 8th, giving up 3 runs without recording a single out. Wakefield also gave up back-to-back HR's to Vladimir Guerrerro and Torii Hunter in the 2nd inning of a 5-3 loss to the Angels.

The Mets pulled into a tie with the Phillies for 1st place in the NL East by beating the Reds 7-5 in 10 innings, while the Phillies lost 3-2 in 11 innings to the Marlins. The Mets scored 2 in the 10th, due in part to Edwin Encarnacion's throwing error, and Edinson Volquez wasn't his normal self, giving up 4 runs on 8 hits (4 by Jose Reyes) in only 5 innings. Duaner Sanchez (5-1) pitched 2 hitless innings in relief of Mike Pelfrey to pick up the win.

The Marlins-Phillies game also went into extra innings, as Jorge Cantu's walk-off RBI single in the 11th sealed the Phillies' fate. The teams only combined for 15 total hits, and 5 Marlins relievers combined to give up only 1 hit in 4 1/3 scoreless innings.

Willie Harris was at it again for the Nationals. After getting 3 hits and 2 RBI on Saturday, he one-upped himself on Sunday as he went 2-3 with 5 more RBI's. That's a hell of a weekend, and he helped the Nationals beat the Braves 15-6 in the rubber game of their 3 game set.

The Blue Jays avoided a sweep, as they beat the Rays 9-4. Marco Scutaro and Alex Rios homered for the Jays. Troy Percival pitched a scoreless 9th for the Rays, his first appearance since he suffered a hamstring strain on June 30.

I would like to thank Mr. Teagarden, since the White Sox bullpen soiled themselves against the Royals, your HR keeps the White Sox in 1st for at least another day.

Aaron "Babe Ruth" Miles' homerun overshadows the fact that the Cardinals bullpen blew there 23rd save of the season.  Yes, the Cardinals still won but somewhere along the line the Cardinals will need to strengthen there bullpen if they want to realistically have a shot of keeping pace with the Cubs and Brewers
