Knicks Making Strong Push to Land Mike D'Antoni

I Don't Blame D'Antoni for Making Compensation Issue #1 ...

... you'd have to pay me a lot to coach either team, as well.

Can I safely assume that I'm not alone in my amusement over the Knicks and Bulls fighting over a coach who failed to win a big playoff series during his tenure with the Phoenix Suns? OK, that's what I thought.

Earlier this week, Marc Stein, the Chris Mortensen of the NBA, said it was basically a done deal that D'Antoni would be headed to the Bulls. He likes the Bulls and GM John Paxson has a mutual interest but there appears to be some differences in finances.

Paxson is also appropriately concerned over the team's strategy. He's a defense guy, clearly D'Antoni is not.

While Pax mulls his decision, it appears the Knicks are set to provide the Suns coach an impre$$ive offer.

Quite the decision - Bulls or Knicks? Who would you choose?

Serious question. As much as I'm a Bulls fan and view the Knicks organization as a total disaster, there's that charm of Madison Square Garden and everything that organization used to mean to the NBA. Rebuilding the Knicks makes you a legend. And in this instance, immortal. So long as Mr. Walsh gave me some kind of long-term assurances, since this is getting turned around quickly, I'd go with the Knicks. Lebron will probably be there in a few short years.

The Bulls are the more talented team, and try not to laugh, not terribly far away from competing in the Eastern Conference. They just need to be coddled appropriately, and add a low post scoring threat.

I like D'Antoni, I really do, but I won't lose any sleep if the Bulls fail to land him. With Avery Johnson as the other "top" available coach, I think this is a good offseason to try and find that sleeper assistant coach.

If I'm D'Antoni, as long as the money is similar, I wouldn't even consider the Knicks.  The Bulls are much, much more talented than the Knicks and already have some great pieces for a running team.  Plus LeBron is going to end up with the other New York team.

When the Bulls become so talented?  Hinrich, Gordon and Deng don't seem to have much desire to hang around, and don't give it their all every night.  The team sucks outside of those 3.

I'd argue, not strongly, but I'd argue Tyrus Thomas is immensely talented. As is Noah, honestly. They just need someone to push the right buttons.

I think it's a team that ought to compete for the No. 3 spot in the East, talent wise.

Wow.

Alright.

Cool.

Granted, anybody in the East somewhat realistically has a chance at the 3 seed, so maybe you're right.  Thomas needs to mature more than Curry and Chandler needed to combined.  Noah is nothing more than a Vareajo-type role player.  What are you expecting from him?  You rag on Hansbrough as a glorified Mark Madsen, but it's the same player.  I won't knock the necessary intangibles he has, but he's not ever going to be a big stat sheet contributor.  Different opinions of talent, I suppose.

We can agree that Thomas is a nutcase. As is Noah in a totally different sense.

When I speak of talent, I speak of their potential gifts on a basketball court. Few people have the athleticism and Tyrus Thomas. He's Josh Smith, without his head screwed on. I'd like to think at his young age, there's still a coach capable of showing him the light. Do you agree?

Noah is 7'0. Works ridiculously hard, and short of Nowitzki, Garnett, etc, fairly athletic for a big man. I don't like the guy, but I understand his game. He has a hell of basketball IQ.

Add those two guys to Hinrich, wait, nevermind. I kind of think he sucks. But Deng and Gordon are talented. You know that.

Honestly, I don't think it's a stretch to ask that the Bulls should've finished 3rd or 4th this year with appropriate guidance. We're not talking entire NBA, just the East.
Guys like Drew Gooden aren't terrible. Not great, but they should at least be consistently productive.

Basically the Bulls are an expirement in terrible team chemistry.

If I were D'Antoni, the Knicks money would have to be quite a bit more(although on Mike and Mike this morning, I heard Ric Bucher mention 6.5 million per) because the Bulls should be less of a project(for the reasons Jason stated).  It will be interesting to see where both D'Antoni and Johnson end up, as there should be teams lining up to want them to coach their franchises, IMO.

I'm on board with Screamin A. - the Knicks are just a bartering chip to either get a ton of money from Chicago, or regain some of the personnel control he lost when Kerr was hired if he's to stay in Phoenix.

Yeah, well after this article or any of the comments were posted.  It quickly became a last resort.
