Lloyd Carr to Retire At Season's End -- Who's Next for Michigan?
by CriticalFanatic

It remains just a rumor for now, but anyone following the situation over the last several years knew there was a 90% chance Lllloy Carr would retire at the end of this season even prior to the Appalachian State defeat. Expect Lloyd to officially tell his players before Saturday's Ohio State game and inform the media early next week that the bowl game will be his last.

This will be an extremely critical offseason for Michigan Football. As we've seen some coaching hires can cripple even the most prestigious programs.

The speculation since early in the 3rd quarter against Appy State was that Les Miles would be the top choice for the Maize and Blue. Those rumors have yet to diminish with the LSU Tigers success, but would he be in a better position in Ann Arbor? The only reason Miles takes that job is the lure of coaching his alma mater.

Other names likely to be on the list? Expect every "hot" name under the sun. A perusal of Michigan message board this morning offered anywhere from Steve Spurrier to Jim Harbaugh to Bill Cowher and of course, Nick Saban. I suspect we'll see a more surprising name from a lower tier program (hint: think Big East up-and-comer).

Who do you think will be coaching the Wolverines next fall?

Those guys are all good choices, but maybe Michigan could hire a defensive coordinator as coach. I'm thinking Kevin Cosgrove.

I'm certain this was 100% his choice too.  The best part is that they will replace him with the one coach most similar to him in the whole nation.  I shouldn't mock him too much though, not many people get to as many Rose Bowls as he did even if it was mostly because the school name attracts tons of talent.

Honestly, before the Appy State game there were a lot of rumors this offseason that he was stepping down this year regardless of the outcome.

I think this is 100% his choice also. I hope he wins this weekend and the Rose Bowl then just gives them a Joe Glenn and walks away.

I heard those too, but I still think he got quite a bit of pressure to make this his last year after that.  Ultimately it doesn't matter.  I just know if I were Michigan I'd try to find out if Spurrier would have any interest leaving South Carolina, and if that fails see if Bobby Petrino wants out of Atlanta.  Then, I'd probably go with Ron English, and if that somehow failed I guess go with Les Miles.

I could see Spurrier leaving South Carolina.  He's got to be feeling like he'll never win there.

I'd hate to lose Oregon OC Chip Kelly, but I could see him leaving for a big-name program like Michigan.  He's possibly the best offensive mind in all of college football.

The Michigan faithful are interested in an Oregon coach, but it's not of the assistant variety.

If your referring to Mike Bellotti, he has said that he wants a national championship at Oregon, then he would consider retirement for himself.  He doesn't want an NFL job, and he doesn't consider a "lateral move" for himself or assistants accepting similar gigs, a wise choice.

But he has talked to other schools in the past, so that and 50 cents will get you a cup of coffee, I suppose.

Lloyd Carr wants to put an end to his bowl game/big game misery. This would be the easy way out.

Coaches have said a lot of things that sound great to their current fan base. I bet Bellotti interviews at the very least.

I wouldn't leave if I was Mike not with Nike is his back pocket, although if there's a school that the swoosh has just as much influence over it's the winged helmet.

Not that I would leave Oregon right now either, but I don't think Oregon (or just about any school) to Michigan is a lateral move.  Thats a move up.  That said, it'd be hard to leave Oregon after this season unless they just bomb out to finish the season.

Spurrier is having a terrible year at SC, plus he's 61-62 years old. I doubt Michigan will approach him.

I think though that Michigan fans would be equally unhappy when Bellotti has a 7 or 8 win season on a given year.  It's bound to happen, as it has several times over the past 12 years in Bellotti's tenure at Oregon.

Bellotti was offered the USC job before Pete Carroll took it, and he flew to Notre Dame to (at least) listen to their schpeel.  That fact that he stayed at a school, in a small media market, like Oregon, says a lot about his character and integrity.
