Roger Goodell Orders Green Bay Packers To Shop Brett Favre And Solve This Mess

Goodell Laying Down The Law, Shining A Light At The End Of The Tunnel For The Favre Fiasco
by Pat
7/23/08

ESPN's Chris Mortensen has reported that the Packers have officially started working to get Brett Favre out of town. With the recent trades of Jeremy Shockey and Jason Taylor, it's looking like Favre might be the 3rd big name traded this week. Commissioner Roger Goodell is as sick of this fiasco as the rest of us, and wants the Packers to settle it ASAP.

It's a bit convenient for the Packers that Shockey and Taylor were traded so recently, as it gives them a good idea of what the market should be for Favre. The Giants received 2nd and 5th round picks for Shockey, and the Dolphins got 2nd and 6th round picks from the Redskins for Taylor. As a future Hall of Fame QB who will not only bring more wins, but more fans to whichever team he plays for, Favre may hold even more value.

The two most popular picks for Favre destinations are Minnesota and Tampa Bay. The Packers would almost certainly not allow Favre to stay within the division, combined with the fact that they're accusing the Vikings of tampering, so we might as well take them off the list. And although Favre has reportedly claimed that it is too hot in Tampa Bay, he may not have a choice, if he wants to play this year.

If I were Buccaneers GM Bruce Allen, I would be on the phone with the Packers, offering next years 2nd and 5th round picks. It's more than what the Redskins gave up for Jason Taylor, who is another player who will only be around for another year, possibly two. But the Bucs desperately need a QB, and a guy like Favre just might be enough to make them a legitimate contender.

Joe Theismann has also weighed in and thinks that Favre's familiarity with Gruden's offense makes Tampa a good fit. Theismann believes it's Tampa or bust for Favre, and puts Favre's odds of going to the Bucs or retiring at 50-50.

Other teams that I would like to see make a run for Favre:

49ers - Alex Smith clearly isn't the answer here. They have some good young talent on defense, and a great RB in Frank Gore, who could give Favre just enough of a ground threat to open up the passing game.

Ravens - Until Joe Flacco takes over, Favre could be a viable solution. The Ravens have solid veteran WR's, a good RB in McGahee, and a potentially elite defense. They could instantly become favorites in the AFC North with the addition of Favre.

Bills - Can you imagine Brett Favre throwing to Lee Evans, Josh Reed, and rookie James Hardy? Me neither. Of course, being in the same division as the Patriots, at best they'll be a wild card.

Roger Goodell overstepping his boundaries?  Go figure, never would've guess he'd do that.

Not to be a nitpicker (because God knows I hate nits) but the Ravens are in the AFC North and I think that they wouldn't necessarily be the favorite but they would be much improved.

You really think the Steelers, Bengals and Browns are really all that good? The Ravens had a pretty talented team last year, despite their record, and the QB situation was an absolute mess. With the ability and the confidence that Favre brings to the table, I think they could be the team to beat in the division.

Yes......but look at it from his point of view. The season opens we have great games all through week one with great performance after another. But what is all over the paper and ESPN. Pictures of Brett sitting on the sidelines in a Packers uniform. That would be a year long distraction that the NFL doesn't need right now.

Just my opinion of the situation. But hey I'm a Dolphins fan so leave Brett where he is. Anything to keep the attention away from Miami.

And to piggy-back on what Kappa said... is there really anyone who DOESN'T want this resolved? Whether or not it's within his boundaries, I think it's something that most people would have done, if they were in his shoes.
