Bill Buckner Throws Out First Pitch at Red Sox Opening Day
by CriticalFanatic

Now that Boston has won two World Series in the last four years, Red Sox Nation was finally ready to forgive Bill Buckner.

That's at least the way it seemed this afternoon, when the former first baseman who infamously let Mookie Wilson's ground ball slip under his glove allowing the game winning run to score for Mets, forcing a Game 7 that New York would eventually win. Buckner was brought in after the Red Sox had paid tribute to all the Boston sports legends.

Either way, it was a nice gesture and Buckner sure was appreciative.
"[It was] probably about as emotional as it could get," Buckner said. "A lot of thoughts [were] going through my mind. I wish I didn't have to walk all the way from left field, too many things. But just good thoughts, which is a nice thing."
His long walk seemed a big awkward at the time, almost as if he was ashamed to have been brought with actual sports legends from Boston, but perhaps he was just soaking the moment in as best he could.

So let's see, is Steve Bartman going to throw out the first pitch after the Cubs win it all?

(and no, I wasn't able to write that with a straight face)

Your face wasn't straight because the Cubs will never win one, not because Bartman won't throw the first pitch

That's was basically the reasoning ... don't worry, I've come to grips with that long ago.

That ovation was disturbingly long. I understand the reasoning behind it, but come on, Sox fans. It was ok for a little bit, but then it just got awkward. Sure, the guy's forgiven. But we don't have to LIKE him, do we?

What a loser. He's lucky he didn't get attacked or shot.

I did not realize that Buckner was hated. He got a standing ovation in game 7 at Fenway, and when he returned to the team in 90. I hate that stupid replay that has been burned into my retinas, but not the player.

Ok I did hate him but all is forgiven!! Stupid media.

I think Buckner is a moron for even showing up. He has had to move several times, his kids have lived in fear from the death threats and attacks from moron Red Sox fans. Yet he shows up at Fenway to throw out the first pitch. What a coward.

He should have spit on the mound, grabbed his balls and flipped off the crowd.

Billy Buck had 12 errors in that entire year with the Sox, with a FP of .992, but we all only remember the one missed grounder... I'm glad Fenway welcomed back Buck.  Long over due

First of all, this wasn't his first time back.  He got a standing O the first game next year, in 87 when he came back and in 90 when he played there again.  The fans never blamed him.  It was Dan Shaughnessy trying to sell books.

It was his first official trip back as a Red Sox player in a long damn time. His last time there was in 97', but he was a coach for the White Sox then.

The fans never blamed him? ARE YOU KIDDING? That must be a joke, right?
