Bill Walton vs Shaquille O'Neal: Who You Got?
by CriticalFanatic

It's hard to believe these two pretend philosophers/quote machines have never gone at it before, but it was worth the wait.

Shaq wins in terms of making his point, and calling out Walton's hypocritical ways, but the Big Red-Head delivers a killer line.

"Shaq's arrogance is an insult to people who think."

Oh snap.

Who's side are you on here? You're allowed to say their both idiots and choose Marisa Miller's side.

The funniest thing about this, is that Shaq goes on to prove Walton's last statement about Shaq's arrogance (which damn, that is harsh) true, and Shaq doesn't even realize it.  I always thought it was funny that Kobe gets ripped right and left for his ego, but nobody would ever say anything bad about Shaq.  It says a lot about the state of our media, when a guy gets a free pass for coming up with a good one liner every week.

I don't care if Shaq mumbled the mandarin alphabet with a mouth full of cheerios, I'm going to back it over anything that horse's ass Walton says.

I am with you even though Shaq is wrong, but I hate Bill Walton.

The man who must have the worst memory or just an amazingly short attention span. Here is an example:

"Hey Bill how that sandwich?"

"This is this greatest peanut butter and jelly sandwich ever!"

"But Bill you didn't you say the tuna was the best ever?"

"Yes, the tuna is the best sandwich ever"

"So you are saying the peanut butter and jelly is not the best then?"

"Yes, throw down big BP & J. You are the best sandwich ever."

"So what is it Bill?

"Well the egg salad is the greatest sandwich ever."

Replace sandwich with NBA players or coaches and you have a typical segment with Walton.

Bill I know things are rough since the Jerry is dead and Phish broke up, so just start you own hippie jam band and leave us alone. Right now, I am trying to find the old NBA video with either Dick Bavetta or Joey Crawford yelling at Walton, "shut up you big baby".

I do not have allegiance to either person, but I kinda agree with what Walton was saying, if you read between the lines, he is saying, that Shaq, pretty much tanked it on his teammates to get traded, instead of just going to front office and ask for a trade, as anyone who knows anything and has watched Shaq play he was a shell of his former self, I went to game in Boston and he was a joke, I actually felt bad for him, remember Willie Mays playing out the string it was sad, or my favorite Athlete of all time Carlton Fisk last year with White Sox, it hurt to watch.

Sometimes I get upset at some of the things the commentators say about certain players when they have not even played that sport or have been in their shoes.
Its quite easy to sit behind a desk and state your opinion. Especially calling out shaq for basically "sand bagging" while he was in Miami.  I really beleive that Shaq did put Walton in his place with his comments. I beleive that Shaq will be ready to go, and with a good team and coaching staff the will utilize him in the most effective ways.
Shaq has always handled the media well in his career and this was just another time where he came off professinal.

I don't see how Shaq put Walton in his place.  I only played high school basketball, but even I can see and say that Shaq isn't half of what he used to be.  The fact that Shaq was better than Walton was (partly due to Walton's never ending list of injuries), doesn't mean Walton can't comment or give his opinion on  Shaq.  I hate the fact that I have to "back up" Walton because he's horrible at what he does, but he was pretty accurate with everything he said.

I don't fully agree. I think this criticism from Walton comes from his jealousy that O'Neal has won 4 NBA titles and is still relatively healthy for being such a large man late in his career.

I just think it's off for Walton who battled injuries himself to make the judgement call that it's just Shaq's motivation that's keeping him down.

It should be noted that Walton somehow came back from injuries in 1985 after moving over from the Clippers (bad team) to the Celtics (great team) and looked inspired in playing 80 games at the age of 33 and winning an NBA title. Walton sought out the two best teams in the league before the 1985 season and ultimately signed with Boston. This may be some of the hypocrisy Shaq is referring to.

I don't fully agree with Walton either.  There is a way Shaq can win - if the Suns win.  However, he is right in that Shaq should be questioned for what he's done.  Its also not the first time he's done this (granted, with some good results.)

As for Walton's hypocrisy... we've all made our share of stupid decisions, but it doesn't take away our right to point out when other people make stupid or poor decisions.  If that makes Walton a hypocrite, then we're all hypocrites.  In that case Shaq either hates himself or is the ultimate hypocrite.

Then it's also fair for Shaq to call Walton a hypocrite, right?

So you've got two guys calling each other for what they are. Except, Walton also has done essentially what Shaq is doing, just going about it different in a different time. That's what Walton should just shut up.

I just want to know why we lower the standards so much for Shaq.  If Walton and Shaq are both wrong, why does only one guy need to shut up?  Shaq proved Walton's point of Shaq's arrogance to be true, so Walton at least has something right.

Bill Walton had Maurice Lucas, who was probably the toughest guy in the history of basketball.  Even Walton will tell you that.  And as a 6'9" PF/C he averaged 20/11.  They had Dr. Jack, too

thanks I can be ignorant sometimes, all I was saying is Bill was a pretty good player in his time, also the Celts would not have won in 86 without him, but yea I should not have made a statement without checking roster, I condem people when they do it, thanks for keeping me on my toes

You weren't necessarily in the wrong, a lot of people share your opinion.  Bill Walton was the star of that team.  I just think people underrate Lucas' contributions.  Walton rushes to his defense, though, and and claims he couldn't have done it without him.  Although that could just be Bill being humble for the cameras.
