Dara Torres - Matt Lauer Interview On Today Show 2008 Olympics And Performance-Enhancing Drugs

Doubts May Linger, But Torres Offers A Convincing Answer Regarding PEDs

41-year-old Dara Torres will be one of the major headlines for the U.S. heading into the 2008 Beijing Olympic games, and rightfully so. She 41 and is competing in a sport where you're too young at age 26, and not to mention, looks rather mannish at times.

Unfortunately, with the current sports landscape, all phenomenal athletic feats must be followed by the same question: did he/she cheat to get there?

So naturally, after she broke her own U.S. record in the 50 meter freestyle two days in a row, the doubts were tossed around Sunday papers, among them Jason Whitlock lamenting that only two years ago she could have enjoyed the accomplishments with minimal scrutiny.

Not anymore. While that's disappointing, I've come to expect the constant second-guessing as I do it myself.

To address these discussion head on, Torres joined Matt Lauer on the Today Show Monday morning and provide a straightforward answer:
"Absolutely not," Torres said. "In fact, I've taken a proactive approach. I went to [the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency] and I met with the CEO there, and said, 'Hey, people are talking about me, they can't believe I'm doing this. I'm an open book. DNA test me, blood test me, urine test me, do whatever you want.' I want to show people I'm clean."
OK, then, we'll believe her. If you're still a doubter, we suggest you read through her daily workout regime which would put some world-class athletes programs to shame.

It's shameful that athletes in today's sports world have to think in those terms, but I'm really glad she's been proactive.  Hopefully that minimizes the criticism.

Kudos to 41 year old Dara Torres! She is evidence of a clean and healthy lifestyle that is paying BIG dividends.  What an inspiration to both the young and old athlete.  She is a true ambassador of the sport!  We wish you and all of your team mates the best in Beijing.  Bring home the GOLD!

Agreed.  I can't see anyone but her carrying the flag at Opening Ceremonies.

Because no one who trains that hard could possibly be on PEDs.

Except, you know, guys like Barry Bonds.

I'm not sure the words "I want to show people I'm clean" ever crossed Bonds' lips.  I may be wrong, but I don't recall hearing or reading those.

I have been in attendance at 3 days worth of competion at this year's trials in Omaha.  I truly can't say anything about Torres, other than I hope she is still this strong in Beijing.  With so many records being broken, I believe their needs to be more testing for performance enhancing drugs.  If these athletes are truly doing this naturally, then Cher has never had any kind of plastic surgery and Hugh Hefner has never touched Viagra.  Pretty soon track athletes will be running faster than pro stock motorbikes and swimmers will be done before the starter pistols smoke clears!
