David Tyree Catch: How Was He Not Super Bowl MVP?
by CriticalFanatic CriticalFanatic | >7 days ago15 Comment Comments »

Since giving the Super Bowl MVP award to the New York Giants wouldn't have made for sexy headlines today, it made sense to give it to an offensive player.

The wrong player apparently. Great game for Eli Manning, but this play alone should have earned the crown for David Tyree.

An improbable player -- apparently he dropped everything all week -- making an improbable catch for one of the most improbable Super Bowl champions of all time.

+8 thumbs upI'm still shocked at Eli avoiding being sacked and then being able to get the ball off. Granted it wasn't perfect, but he deserves props for that particular play too. If he hadn't miraculously escaped that swarm, Tyree wouldn't have had a ball in the air to catch.

+3 thumbs upTo me it was near impossible to pick one guy that was most valueable.  This was a true team achievement.  If you couldn't give it to the whole defensive line, might as well give it to the QB.

Maybe a $1,000 handshake from Archie Manning to the NFL helped Eli....

+3 thumbs upThat comment surprises me, Todd;  I didn't think anyone would go there, since the winning QB is usually the default choice for MVP in a Super Bowl!!

+3 thumbs upThat play, given the situation, is one of the greatest we'll ever see, IMO. It went from a possible 4th and 5 or 4th and 12 to 1st down at the 25 with less than a minute left. An amazing catch. I'm kind of surprised there was no review. In fact, there wasn't a review all game, was there?

They reviewed the 12 men on the field play.  Reviewing of penalties needs to stop now, but thats for a different topic.

That would be unfortunate if only one position got the MVP by default. But I meant my comment to be in jest.

+1 thumbs upHow did Eli get the fricking MVP? this shoulda been Tuck's MVP! the guy had like 2 or 3 sacks and forced the fumble! IMO Eli didn't deserve it, and its Peyton's SB MVP all over again! I dont know about everyone else, but I'm tired of seeing the SB MVP being a joke award now!

And another thing.....why were the worst two commentators in the history of sports doing the SB? Listen to Buck in the video....it sounds like he doesnt care, and that play was simply amazing! And Aikman didn't say a word till way after the fact......Biased bastards!!!

+4 thumbs upTuck defensive MVP but without ELI avoiding that sack and crossing his fingers on that loft to TYree they lose the game...Eli deserved it just for rare escapability that he never previously showed

+5 thumbs upI know why, because without Manning breaking 4 tackles, there is no David Tyree catch.

+4 thumbs up  As my good friend's son would say, Manning was more slippery than a slug in fondue on that play.

The call actually could have made the play better. I do not like FOX Sports and Joe Buck is a BASEBALL announcer, not football. His voice is too boring for football.

+1 thumbs upI can see how Eli won the MVP because he put the team on his back and drove them down the field against the 18-0 Patriots just after Brady did the same. It's one thing putting the final drive together after a punt or something, it's a whole other thing doing so after someone like Brady just drove for the lead. That and Manning did escape what was probably 3 or 4 other sacks on that drive alone. Most of them he just ended up running for a few yards and kept the clock running, but that is better than getting sacked.

I did think Tuck deserved the MVP though.

+5 thumbs upIt's hard to single any one individual player out for MVP honors because like many of you have already said, it was truly a team effort. Personally, I would have given the award to the defensive line if that were possible.

As far as individual players go, Eli Manning is definitely deserving of it, particularly because of the way he led the Giants down the field in that game winning drive. Tyree made two HUGE plays for the G-Men, and that would have merited the MVP award as well. Justin Tuck was the defensive star, and would have deserved the MVP nod.

I'm still on cloud 9 over this win, so frankly, I really don't care who the MVP is or why. I'm just happy the Giants are world champions :D

+2 thumbs upMaybe Eli got it because everyone said he would LOSE the game singlehandedly for the Giants! And instead, he played like an MVP and beat an unbeatable team!!!!! Besides, Tyree can not catch the ball if it was not thrown to him! And it would not have been thrown at him to catch had Eli been sacked that play- like he should have been!
