Elite XC: Unfinished Business - Lawler vs. Smith II Preview And Predictions
Kimbo And Gina Carano Back at Elite XC! Sort Of.
by ohiostate1016
7/25/08

Kimbo Slice and Gina Carano will be there, but they'll just be signing autographs. This time, the main event features a rematch for the XC middleweight title between champion Robbie Lawler and Scott Smith. The first fight - which took place during the first EliteXC on CBS card - ended in the third round when Smith was poked in the eye. Smith promises that he is OK and ready to go for this fight, but one has to wonder where his head will be on Saturday in Stockton, California.

Two other title fights are on the card, as new champions will be crowned in the heavyweight and welterweight divisions (both classes are currently without a champion in the EliteXC organization). Your complete preview of the event is below.

Prelims (will be shown on Showtime prior to the CBS portion of the card)

LW: David Douglas (3-1) over Marlon Matias (5-2) - Both have losses to known fighters (Jeff Curran and Carlo Prater, respectively), but I'm going to side with the fact that Douglas finishes fights, and he finishes them fast (2 wins in under a minute).

HW: Drew Montgomery (4-3) over Brandon Tarns (1-1) - Montgomery has more experience, and he has finished all of his wins via (T)KO.

HW: Carl Seumanutafa (3-0) over Mike Cook (5-1) - Cook looks to be more well-rounded, but Seumanutafa is a KO artist. I look for him to finish this one early.

FW: Wilson Reis (4-0) over Bryan Caraway (10-2) - Caraway has more experience, but Reis is a wizard at submissions. He's one of the best young prospects in XC.

LHW: Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante (6-1) over Travis Galbraith (15-5) - Galbraith - a Canadian who has fought in PRIDE and King of the Cage - has more experience, but if you've seen Feijao fight, then you know why I'm picking the BJJ expert here.

HW title: Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva (10-1) over Justin Eilers (20-7-1) - Many of you may have heard of Eilers - an MFS fighter and UFC and WEC veteran - and that's because he's a true veteran of the sport. But he's a journeyman, and Silva is much more than that. He's one of the true gems of the heavyweight division, and the American Top Team member - who has also fought in K-1 and BoDog - is by far the best heavyweight in EliteXC.

LHW: Anthony Ruiz (20-11) over Jeremy Freitag - Ruiz is a veteran who holds a win over XC LHW champ Bobby Southworth, and Freitag is a .500 fighter with a funny name. This is an easy fight to pick.

Main Card (will be shown on CBS)

Female: Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos (4-0) over Shayna Baszler (9-4) - I'm pretty sure that Cristiane is the sister of Chute Boxe member Evangelista Santos, and if that's true, then you're in for a wicked Muay Thai exhibition, with Baszler's face as the target.

WW title: Jake Shields (20-4-1) over Nick Thompson (36-9-1) - Thompson has won 12 in a row - including victories over Eddie Alvarez and Michael Costa - and he's one of the best unknown fighters in the sport. But Shields - who trains in California with Cesar Gracie - is a top ten welterweight fighter who just seems to keep getting better. Both fighters excel in submissions, so don't expect this one to stay standing for long. If you are a fan of jiu-jitsu, then this is the one you will want to watch.

LW: Nick Diaz (17-7) over Thomas Denny (26-16) - Diaz is the next fighter to face XC LW champion KJ Noons, so this fight is exactly what you would expect for a number one contender fighter. Denny is an extremely experienced journeyman, but he provides little threat to Diaz, who is a jiu-jitsu specialist under Cesar Gracie as well. Nick likes to get fired up and has a tendency to start yelling at whomever is in the main event, so don't be surprised to see him go after Robbie Lawler, who he holds a win over in the UFC.

MW title: Scott Smith (13-4) over Robbie Lawler (17-4) - Why not? I picked Smith the first time, so I guess that means that I have to do it again. Both fighters are knockout specialists, so it would seem that this fight wouldn't last very long. But hey, what do I know? The first fight went to the third round, and it looked like it was set to go to the cards before it was ruled a no contest. I say that this one will last 23 seconds.

As always...

Let's fight!
