Cancer Survivor Pitches Feel Good Story of Baseball's Season (Even If It Was Just the Royals)
by CriticalFanatic

When throwing a no-hitter is, at best, only your second greatest accomplishment as a 24-year-old, you know you've achieved some special things.

Red Sox Jon Lester survived cancer that forced him to miss the end of 2006 and the first part of 2007 and tonight he tossed a no-hitter against the Kansas City Royals. It's the 18th no-hitter in Boston's history.

The line: 9 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 2 BB and 9 K.

What a special story. Chills for me when the information popped across the bottom of the Cubs game that he was through eight inning without a hit.

I can't empathize, but I imagine after overcoming a scary disease, Kansas City Royals batters don't seem so overwhelming.

And as "feel good" as this story may be (which I downplay anyway since it's the Red Sox), we're going to need about 10 more cancer fighters to pitch perfect games and that guy with no legs to clean up in the Olympics to cancel out the Spurs advancing tonight.

"Just" the Royals?  They're pretty good this year and batting .264 as a team.  It's a quality accomplishment, especially considering the Royals had only been no-hit once in the history of the franchise before tonight.

One last thing for CF, why aren't you calling for Dusty Ba.., erm, Francona's head letting a 24 year old throw 130 pitches? Where's THAT on the stat line?

Just in case it's not obvious, I do realize you don't mess with a no-no.  Still funny.

He'll get lit up next outing, but you can live with that.

I am a Yankee Fan.  But Congrats to Jon Lester .. after what that young man went thought the last couple years .. he deserved something good to happen like this ..  I may not like The Red Sox .. I may not watch Red Sox games .. I may not like 99.9% of The Red Sox players .. but I know when to acknowledge an accomplishment like a no hitter .. you deserved it Jon .. Congrats!!

hey, I take offense to that........the Royals are actually playing well this year
the Cubs would be a minor league team if they were in the AL

Royals are the 11th best hitting team this year... Really impressive no-hitter.
