Marty Brennaman Thinks Throwing Baseballs Onto The Field Is The Worst Crime In History
by 100%InjuryRate 100%InjuryRate
4/18/08

Courtesy of the good lads at Deuce of Davenport, we now have video/audio of Cincinnati Reds announcer Marty Brennaman going off on Chicago Cubs fans.

After Adam Dunn launched a mammoth home run, Cubs fans decided they'd throw pretty much every ball in the stadium on to the field in protest. And as a result, Cincinnati Reds announcer Marty Brennaman went off on a rather ridiculous rant, saying Cubs fans are the worst in baseball and how he always roots against them.

Yes Marty. There's clearly nothing worse than fans throwing baseballs out onto the field. I can think of a whole laundry list of much more minor offenses like fans of one team beating up an opposing fan, and of course eventually then returning the favor. Because clearly fans beating the crap out of each other is much preferable to people throwing balls onto the field.

So yes, lay into those Cubs fans. How dare they throw balls onto the field and mock your Reds. Just be careful about making cracks about how the Cubs will never win. Your team isn't exactly on the verge of winning the World Series anytime in the next 25 years either.

Marty, if you want to see real crime, just visit the Bengal's locker room.

Granted, there is a small faction of Cubs fans who are complete imbeciles. They go to games just to get wasted and pretend their Gods gift to women. I'd like to think that I don't fall into this category ... except for that I might do the first and definitely am the second.

Here's what pisses me off about Brennaman. That he hates Cubs fans for constantly blaming the goat. It's the media that has sensationalized the curse. Fans joke about it, but hardly any Cubs fans really believe a goat is causing the losing. It makes for a storyline. Marty being part of the media should realize this.

Secondly, Marty has long hated the Cubs and I've got to think it's rooted in jealously. His counterparts for WGN make far more money than he does. He gets to call games in Cinci with half the stadium full, while Wrigley is sold out every day. I'm curious if long ago he was passed over for the job or something.

This also happened when the Cubs were routing the Reds. Sorry, Marty.

Marty is right. How stupid can you be. You might as well have been throwing trash on the field. What was the point? The Cubs were up 10+ runs, it was a meaningless home run.

Critical fanatic - Marty is in the Hall of Fame. You think he is jealous, that is absurd. Also, please enlighten me and let me know where you find salary information of MLB broadcasters. If that is true that they make more money the answer to that is simple - it's a much larger market. Brennaman is better than anyone the Cubs have ever had and that includes the "great" Harry Caray.

As far as the curse, unfortunately the fact that ANY fans believe the goat is causing the curse is laughable to me.

On any sold out day at Wrigley, I would estimate that about 85% of the fans know nothing about baseball. It's a social thing for them and it results in idiot behavior like we saw the other night.

I actually like Marty in terms of how he does his job, aside from the angst against Cubs fans. He's definitely a hall of famer and enjoyed listening to him when I was going to college in the area.

I think he could have left it at "these behavior is embarrassing to Cubs fans." That would have been sufficient.

Calling them the most obnoxious in baseball, and sharing that he loves when they lose might have been a little unprofessional.

Once again, the exaggeration of the social atmosphere at Cubs games continue to be greatly overrated. I attend roughly 10 or so games every year and there just as many jackasses at other ballparks as there are at Wrigley. It's seems like its a crime that we tend to enjoy ourselves at games. Since we lose so often, might as well, right?

Critical Fanatic - I live in Cincinnati and I have been going to Wrigley Field for the last 15 years - it sucks they don't schedule the Reds on the weekends there like they used to but that's beside the point - I would estimate that more than half the people at Wrigley are transplants who now live in Chicago and cheer for the Cubs and go to the game because that's what society says is cool to do. I don't think the social atmosphere is exaggerated at all and I feel comfortable saying that because I have seen it first hand, year after year. For a place that holds less than 40,000 the ratio of jackasses far exceeds the 5 or so other stadiums I have been to. Don't get me wrong, I love Wrigley and love the city of Chicago but I wish we could weed out the jackasses from the true fans. I have no problem having fun at a game and drinking (even heavily) as long as you are responsible about it but there is never a need to start firing crap on the field. Unless it's the actual homerun ball from the opposing team.

Marty isn't afraid to express his opinion and he tells it like it is. You should know that from your days in Oxford.
