Miami Upsets Duke, Virginia Tech Pukes
by CriticalFanatic
2/21/08

How the ... what the ... After 45 years of failing, Miami (fl) finally, and quite shockingly upset Duke. That's two straight losses for the Blue Devils and one confused coach.

"Our team -- there's something missing this week," coach Mike Krzyzewski said. "We are not the same team these last two ballgames. It's almost like someone has come in and invaded their bodies."

At least he didn't go to the injury well. Roy Williams appreciates that very much, and suggests he do a much better job coaching his own damn team. It's been discussed a great deal this season, and this game finally exploited a big Duke weakness. If a team has a physical, skilled post player they're in trouble. Dwayne Collins had his way: 12-14 FG, 26 points, 7 boards. Miami 96, Duke 95.

Overall, very little defense was played on the court, but off the court this officer earns the highlight of the night. Choke-slamming an unlucky student storming the floor.

Gross. Virginia Tech's Dorenzo Hudson vomited right on the court at Maryland, creating a bio-hazard like massive cleanup. (Thanks to Sporting Blog for vid) DC Sports Bog was there and has plenty of reaction ... to the vomit.

The Beas Knees Michael Beasley broke a freshman record with his 22nd double-double, unfortunately it came in a bad loss to Nebraska.

Tonight's Big Game: Pittsburgh at #21 Notre Dame. Panthers can get back into Big East with a win.

As a Duke fan, I felt like this would be a loss after the first game in Durham.  While Duke won by 15, Miami played them well.  So I thought it would be difficult to win down there.  I had hope, after the Wake loss, they might pull it together enough to go down and win.  Instead, they played their worst 30 minutes of basketball this year (and still came close to winning).

I'm not sure the big man is significant.  They've had quite skilled big men play as well against them and they still won (see Maryland twice, UNC).  Certainly he hurt them, but they had a season high turnover count, and didn't shoot as well.  That really was the difference more so than the size.  Some of that was Miami, but some of it was just Duke not playing as well as they have most of the year.  I tend to agree with Krzyzewski in that they haven't looked like the same team.  They've played better teams than Wake & Miami and won, sometimes easily.  I think a lot of it is on them.

I keep hearing "45 years" - how many times have they played in those 45 years?  Rarely, I would think, until the last 3 years when Miami joined the ACC.  This isn't like a Clemson win in Chapel Hill or anything.  The whole "45 years" is overblown, but I guess it sounds good.

And is anyone more paranoid than Roy Williams?  He gets all bent out of shape at least once every year over something someone says, and usually it's not even about him, although he manages to make it about him.  Just because someone says "unlike other schools, we don't do this" doesn't mean they're criticizing Williams.  UNC is not unique in their handling of such issues, so the comment is not necessarily directed at Roy - who just needs to get over himself.

"Duke" and "Pukes"...So funny. Nice Blog Title! Duke will seek their revenge in the ACC Tourney and/or the NCAA Tourney. I can recall several times after running full-court basketball games where my stomach just about "unleashed the fury" too...

Which is why some fans call dook, puke which always seemed weird to me.

Henderson is a waste of space since he has been injured. The great part is that he is the key for dook, unless someone emerges as a threat from someplace other than the perimeter, and he should not be healthy until next season. Early exit in March.

Like I said, dook can't beat teams with quick guards and a post game. Sure they beat UNC and I will continue to bring up that Lawson was not playing unless dook beats UNC in Cameron against a healthy Lawson. Also Q has had incredibly growth in these past few games since his awful game against dook. I actually think that the team UNC has now, being without Lawson and Frasor, would beat dook in a rematch if it were played today. I have not seen the Tar Heels run as much as they did last night since Lawson went down which can only mean that every is comfortable with Q. Now because of that loss, everything is set up perfectly for UNC to win the ACC outright, win the ACC tournament, and take the number one seed in the East.

"Also Q has had incredibly growth in these past few games"

Definitely.  I actually thought he settled down in the second half of the Duke game and played well, but it seems they have all gotten much more comfortable with the situation they're in.  I also agree that they'll win the ACC, which I think will be a surprise to nobody.  With Lawson, they are no doubt the best team.  I don't see them losing another game before the Duke game, and I think - even if Duke wins out and they're both 13-2 - UNC will likely win that game and finish 14-2 to Duke's 13-3.
