Mike Gundy Rant: Oklahoma State Coach Goes OFF On Jenni Carlson For Bobby Reid Criticism
by CriticalFanatic CriticalFanatic | >7 days ago25 Comment Comments »

I'm sure it's happened before but I've NEVER heard a coach go off on the media quite like this.

Following the Cowboys embarrassing loss to Troy last Friday, apparently someone from the Daily Oklahoman wrote an article about quarterback Bobby Reid, I'm guessing this one, that didn't go over well with Coach Gundy.

So after today's victory over Texas Tech, the media got a mouthful and I mean a mouthful. I love it. Every team would love to have a coach this passionate about his players.

+4 thumbs up

Jenni Carlson thought she was drawing a parallel to Bobby Reid being childish and a momma's boy, and clearly she angered many people to sell newspapers.  I know that she should feel very fortunate that more people have not slammed her for mentioning Reid being fed chicken, since it seems to be somewhat racist to mention chicken and a black athlete in the same sentence.  She walked a fine line and clearly overstepped her boundaries.  I agree with Gundy, if she were ever a parent then she would understand.  Don't attack a college athlete's grit for allowing his mom to do things for him.  I know many college students who aren't athletes that rely on their parents for food, laundry etc.  That is just what some parents do for their kids.

So let's ask Jenny Carlson if she has EVER let her mom feed her a meal during her college years.  Moreover, has she ever been fed chicken because I know she is eating crow now.

I'll be honest; I've never heard a thing Mike Gundy has said before...but I like this. Can't blame him for calling out someone and defending his kids like that.

Kind of upset that they never showed who exactly he was pointing out, to see if it was just a college/just out of school person writing for the newspaper, or another actual grown person talking like that.

EDIT:: Searched for who wrote the article: Jenni Carlson.

+4 thumbs upKudos to him for coming up with an original rant, rather than going with the obvious "LEAVE BOBBY REID ALONE!"

not sure if you noticed, but i did link to her in the post.

But thank you for the visual and clarification. Dear Jenni,  I ... man I want to say a few things, but it's late ... MSU won = a few drinks ... so I won't.

+1 thumbs upDid notice; but you also just did leave it at "someone from the Daily Oklahoman wrote an article". Thought name/picture would do it better

I wouldn't say the article is awful, but she's presuming A LOT in that article linked above without any quotes from players or coaches. That's bad. That's Rob Parker from the Detroit News bad.

I read the whole thing too; and wouldn't say it's wrong or terrible. Just felt at the same time the response/rant that Gundy made was right. Which is why I said in my first post I wondered what the age of the writer was...usually older writer = more responsible in writings, and not making the "Rob Parker mistakes".

+2 thumbs upDid anyone else just let the videos run like I did?

First I got some ad for some website where I can be "crazy like a fox", next it was a news clip from Utah about a park where men were getting friendly with each other. Following that, it was a horrible cover of "Boys of Summer" outside some Bengals event, plus some other Bengals related videos. There was also a high school football highlight video that began with the coin toss. Now it's video of people cutting chunks off of a dead blue whale.

It seemed like the sort of thing we can get away with on the internet as bloggers, mentioning rumors and things that supposedly happened. As a print writer, it's different for her.

+1 thumbs upAgreed, I think you're right. Mike Gundy and Bobby Reid are unlikely to read too many blogs. If they do, they'll take it differently. But when it's your hometown paper and a beat reporter is writing these things it's different.

This is part of what I hate about journalism ... you have to be a complete moron to get attention.

"you have to be a complete moron to get attention"

VERY True...too bad its not just journalism either.
#11 | 289 days ago

That article was pretty low.  I don't think any player, whether they are professional or amateur should go through that.  Everyone goes out and gives their best effort every week.

#12 | 289 days ago

Yeah, her article was crap. I would have expected to find something like that in a high school newspaper. What kind of professional journalist would read into the fact that a college player's mother brought him food. Does she tail the players on Mom's Weekend to make sure none of the players have the women who gave birth to them around???

+2 thumbs upI also noticed he got a round of applause when he was done. Good for him.
#14 | 289 days ago

it was just a mean article. I'm glad she got called on it.
#15 | 289 days ago

Great job Mike Gundy, this will be good for his team too.Gotta love a coach that will stand up for his players like that.

#16 | 289 days ago

Well I read both the Daily Oklahoman and the Tulsa World and the Oklahoman is probably the worst paper in all of America. Most of their sports "writers" try to stir up some kind of controversy or as Mike Gundy pointed out, just makes things up.

Gundy is a badass. I watched him when I was a kid at Midwest City the dude rocks. Everyone who hates OSU agreed that Jenni should have been pimped slapped.
#18 | 288 days ago

+2 thumbs upIf Jenni's facts were false Gundy's anger was justified. However,  Gundy should have given Jenni Carlson a chance to defend her article. Mike was afraid to let her do that, because the truth is he mishandled Bobbie Reid from the very beginning. Neither he nor his coaches have ever given him the total support throughout his career at OSU. By the way I hope Mike used the same tone with his defensive coordinator who just gave up over 650 yards of offense.

Everyone from Oklahoma knows that the DOK are a bunch of OU homers anyway..so screw 'em.. Gundy's speech was mild compared to what I would like to say to them!
#20 | 288 days ago

And just for the record..Im not trying to start the same ole OU/OSU war on here with that comment. Just a passionate fan voicing an opinion.

That comment means war!!!!

I'm just kidding, The Daily Oklahoman isn't biased towards OU or osu, it is biased towards stirring the pot and creating some controversy. It is probably the worst paper I have ever read before. Welcome to FanIQ also.

THe article seemed to take a lot of opinions/assumptions and present them as facts.  Seems like that happens more and more in journalism these days.

Woooooo Hoooooooo, good for him I applaud him to!!!!!!!
