Rafael Nadal Beats Roger Federer At The 2008 French Open
Rafael Nadal's One Trick Show Is Starting To Get Annoying

In winning his 4th straight French Open today, Rafael Nadal has proven he's the greatest clay court tennis player of all time. He's never lost at Roland Garros, and since 2005, Nadal is 115-2 on clay surfaces.

However, he's also proven he's clearly a one trick pony.

Sure, Nadal plays decently on other surfaces, and quite well on grass, but the only Grand Slam he can win is the French Open. That's not going to change, ever. And this bothers me. It bothers me because as a result of Nadal we'll never get to see Roger Federer complete the Grand Slam.

Federer has been to the French Open finals for the past three years and lost to Nadal every single time. Had Federer been born three years earlier, there wouldn't even be a debate about whether or not he's the greatest tennis player of all time. He'd be it by leaps and bounds.

Considering how close Federer is to making tennis history, by proving he's championship proficient on all surfaces, it's maddening to watch him consistently fall to a guy who sometimes doesn't even show up on other surfaces.

I realize people will say that Federer needs to beat the best to be the best ever, but there's never been anyone like Nadal on clay. Unless a piano drops on Nadal, Federer is going to be the reincarnation of Pete Sampras. A great tennis player who couldn't win on clay. And something just seems wrong with that.

He's hardly a one trick pony. Nadal has had more success than just about anyone other than Roger Federer on the other two surfaces. His 'one trick' just happens to be so damn impressive that it makes his finals/semifinals losses in other events seem terribly disappointing.

Agreed. Nadal's been to the last two Wimbledon finals. Took Federer to five sets. He occasionally takes some strange losses on hard courts, but pretty much everyone in the game does.
