Baseball Pops Off Mr. Redlegs' Head, Also Pops Off Reds Bats
5/7/08
I thought it was a good omen that the first image I saw when tuning in to some lunchtime Cubs baseball was the Reds mascot, Mr. Redlegs, falling off a golf cart and losing his head. Literally.
Turns out, it was an entirely different kind of foreshadowing. Not only did the baseball pop of Mr. Redlegs' head, baseballs were popping off the Reds' bats. In particular, Joey Votto.
The Cubs sent out Jon Lieber in hopes of finding a 5th starter to replace Rich Hill. I'd have to say they're still looking. In the second inning alone, Lieber gave up FOUR HOME RUNS. Adam Dunn, Joey Votto, Paul Bako (that's when you know you can't pitch) and then Jerry Hairston, Jr.
Cincinnati wasn't done, nor was Votto.
Cubs "reliever" Sean Marshall gave up back-to-back home runs in the 5th - Brandon Phillips and Votto's 2nd. And just to cap things off, Votto drove in Phillips in the 6th with his 3rd homer of the day. Just fantastic.
The Reds went from 11th in HR's to 3rd overall during the course of the afternoon. Cubs fans also went from sober to drunk.
It's only a matter of time before Lou Piniella loses his head.
