Rick Reilly Is Not Happy With The All-White Guys Home Run Derby
It This Was A Kiwanis Club Meeting, Then Rick Reilly Fits Right In

Who knows why Rick Reilly was invited to participate in ESPN's broadcast of the Home Run Derby, but I guess he has to make enough appearances to support that lofty salary.

Instead of discussing the merits of those participating in the derby, Rick Reilly questioned the selection of eight white players to compete.

"This is like a Kiwanis Club meeting!"

While Reilly has a fair discussion point, he could have used his time to do a little more research. Last year's champ Vlad Guerrero opted out for injury concerns. Alex Rodriguez turned down his offer. Ryan Howard wasn't voted an All-Star and thus, as is part of Derby history, was not allowed to participate. Sure, Miguel Tejada could have been extended an offer, but I think it was smart for baseball not to involve anyone suspected of steroid use.

Was anyone participating last night not worthy? We know Josh Hamilton and Justin Morneau were. Dan Uggla and Chase Utley and crushing shots every night in the NL. Perhaps Grady Sizemore was a reach, but I think it's just a mere coincidence on this occasion. Nice try, Reilly.

I am thankful for Rick's appearance, though, as it provided a hilarious opportunity to test how well Karl Ravech can change the subject.

What do the Home Run Derby and Rick Reilly have in common?

Neither have been relevant for a long time.

ESPN is clearly getting a lot for their $17 million.

Also, just to bust Reilly even more, he should have used Latino, not Hispanic.

Sizemore's a reach? He's leading the AL in HR's.

Well Rick was right in a sense. It was like a Kiwanis Club Meeting and the baseballs were the Kiwanis members.

Near all of them got smashed.

I'm all for open discussion of race but you better make sure its legitimate and you better do it on the proper medium.  That was neither legit nor the proper place.
