I Guess Mr. Woods Was Right, No One Is More Mentally Tough
6/16/08
After these dramatic five days of golf, tomorrow sure is going to be a letdown.
As far as televised golf goes, it might never get better than the last 24 hours. It wasn't always pretty, but at all times it was riveting television that still couldn't be contained by 18 playoff holes. One more was needed for Tiger Woods to finally outlast a fearless Rocco Mediate.
Rocco made very few mistakes throughout the first 18 holes, shocking everyone by leading into the final par 5 18th hole. Tiger surprised no one by sticking a clutch birdie putt to draw even and force a sudden death playoff.
Heading into the 91st hole of the US Open, it was only fitting that this advertisement began airing yesterday as Earl Woods details his son's mental strength and how that will always set him apart.
With Mediate going wayward on his final drive and not close enough on his approach, these words rang true again today. Battling what must have been an incredible amount of pain in his knee after this many holes, Woods calmly tapped in a victorious par. No one will ever be more mentally tough on the golf course than Woods, who captures his 14th career major championship.
More on this later in the evening, with some endearing celebratory footage of Tiger with his daughter and wife.
