It's Always A Good Night When All The Biggest Fights Go The Distance
8/10/08
If you're a fan at all of MMA, then Saturday night you were treated to one heck of an all-around card at UFC 87.
First up, there were a lot of questions about Brock Lesnar and how much he'd improved for his second UFC fight. There were even rumors that were he to lose Saturday night, he'd be canned by UFC. But no worries now, as Lesnar dominated his fight against Heath Herring, coming right out of the gate and drilling Herring with a huge right cross. While the fight ultimately went to a decision, there was little question who won. Lesnar used Herring as a three round punching bag.
Lesnar is still pretty raw, but his talent is unmistakable. He is freakishly quick and athletic for a heavyweight division fighter. If he continues to progress as quickly as he has through two fights, he could soon by the UFC heavyweight champion.
The main fight of the night though, featured reigning welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre against Jon Fitch - who had yet to lose a UFC fight. St. Pierre burst out to an immediate advantage in the fight.
I was convinced this fight wouldn't last much beyond the first round, but it went the full five. As many times as Fitch got knocked down, he got right back up. And even though Pierre turned Fitch's face into hamburger meat, Fitch wouldn't concede. Of course, there was little question about the final decision, as St. Pierre retained his championship. After the fight it was also revealed that BJ Penn would likely move up to St. Pierre's weight class for a rematch of their UFC 58 fight which St. Pierre won by split decision. That fight is likely to occur on December 27th in Las Vegas and would be well worth dropping money on to see it.
The last key fight of the evening was Kevin Florian against Roger Huerta. Florian won a well-deserved decision over Huerta to secure a light heavyweight title shot against reigning champ Forrest Griffin.
