Which College Football Coach Will Have A Media Meltdown Next?
9/27/07
I'd like to thank Mike Gundy and Paul Johnson for their lashing out at the media, right or wrong, adding another entertaining element to an already unpredictable college football season.
"I'm a MAN!! I'm 40!!!" will forever live on as an epic sound byte on television and talk radio. The aftermath of these events haven't been a joy for those involved, but they're fun for us fans which is all that's really important, right. So let these not be the last meltdowns of the season.
Who's going to be next?
Charlie Weis An easy target. St. FUPA might be the most arrogant college football coach of our time, but what happens to his Einstein of Offense persona when the Irish don't just start out 0-8, but 0-9 by losing to the Naval Academy. He's been composed for the most part, but he has shown a few signs of lashing out at the South Bend Tribune's Erik Hansen. Prior the Michigan State game, Hansen wrote a 3rd person piece reflecting on how Charlie Weis got to this state. I applauded, Weis clearly did not. During a press conference the following day, Hansen asked a question to which Charlie quickly retorted, "would you like that in 1st, 2nd or 3rd person. Next question." Consider Erik Hansen on notice following the Southern Cal drubbing in South Bend. Mount Front Butt will explode.
Mike Leach Look at the guy. I'm shocked he hasn't gone Bobby Knight on one of his players yet. Technically Leach has already gone off plenty, and last weekend he had a few lines that rivaled Mike Gundy.
"And then defensively, the entire first half we got hit in the mouth and acted like somebody took our lunch money. All we wanted to do was have pouty expressions on our face until somebody dabbed our little tears off and made us (expletive) feel better. And then we'd go out there and try harder once our mommies told us we were OK. Well, neither one of those things was acceptable."
He even forced his defensive coordinator to walk the plank after getting torched by Gundy's offense. Leach just hasn't made the national rounds ... yet. The history is there for a classic meltdown.
Ed Orgeron FOOOTBAAWWWW! A Coach O rant has such promise. It would be the best meltdown ever due to its completely incomprehensible nature. Below is Orgeron at his most communicative during SEC media days. I think you can picture the beauty of an Orgeron media attack.
Mark Mangino If he can do this to a player, imagine what he'd do to a local reporter. He's probably eaten a few already.
Dan Hawkins He already has a penchant for losing it on his players' families, so he should no qualms about explaining to one of Boulder's finest that it's DIVISION I FOOTBALL! Hawkins has at least one more great byte left in him.
Who else might be next for a classic media meltdown in college football?
