Wladimir Klitschko Knocks Out Tony Thompson In Round 11 Of Heavyweight Title Fight

At Least We Got To See A Guy Get Knocked Out
7/12/08

Well, it wasn't exactly an exciting fight, but whatever. Wladimir Klitschko wound up knocking Tony Thompson out tonight in Germany to keep all 46 of his heavyweight belts.

Frankly, this fight was never in doubt and I'm not even sure how it made it to 11 rounds. I guess Klitschko felt sorry for Thompson or something.

As you can tell from this video of the 11th round, Thompson was pretty much done as soon as he entered the ring. Boxing announcer Larry Merchant, who's been drunk for the last 35 years, slurs a comment in there about how Thompson is gearing up for one more punch. However, Jim Lampley lets us know that Thompson literally has nothing in the tank and is simply trying to stay on his feet.

Lampley clearly was the one who was right. But that's probably because he didn't down a handle of Jim Beam before the fight like Merchant did.

Anyhow, any dreams that this fight would somehow save heavyweight boxing were totally misplaced. Thompson wasn't much of an opponent and as for Klitschko, he better start break dancing after he wins or something. Anything to put butts in the seats.

There is an old song from the 40s I think, entitled, "Ten Cents A Dance",  that reminded me of last nights fight.  Except we would have to vary the title to say, "One Punch and Grab".  Then Klitschko would dance.  If Thompson had stepped away quickly Klitschko would have grabbed at air and fallen.  The "Champion" seems to fight down or up according to the competition.
