Wanted In Texas: Mack Brown's Stepson Chris Jessie Touches Football Before Fumble Recovery

This is the most wanted man in Texas this hour. Why? He committed one of the most boneheaded plays by a non-player that only Steve Bartman could appreciate.

This Longhorns Support Staffer inexplicably stepped onto the field and reached out for a fumbled football after a Rudy Carpenter sack. Whether he touched it or not is debatable. I say no. Regardless, it was ruled he touched the football and the Sun Devils maintained possession and subsequently scored.

The young man's name? Chris Jessie. Better yet, he's apparently Mack Brown's stepson. Get off the damn field, son!

We'll update this with video when it's available. Coach Brown with a smirk wouldn't commit to the staff member being his stepson. Good stuff. Only at the Holiday Bowl.

He did NOT touch that ball. I guess someone should have bought the NCAA new HD cameras for Christmas, cause the refs botched that call BAD!

Whether he touched it or not, between all of the players and coaches Texas had about extra 10 guys out on the field.

Agreed, but thats not the call they made (though they could have). They screwed up the call that they did make. He didn't touch it.

If you can replay too many players on the field couldn't you replay and call holding on every play or be able to review off sides infractions?

I was reading through some of the Texas message boards over halftime and about a half dozen SEC fans stopped by to make it known this is widely considered the worst officiating crew in that conference.

For starters your talking about two different football leagues with two different sets of rules. Second of all, the siutation your talking about the Redskins challenged a fumble and the refs noticed the 12 men thing.

According to NCAA rules, the number of players on the field is reviewable.

You realize that the refs know that there is holding on almost every play, right. They just try to only call it when it directly affects the play, or on a big play so as to not affect the game too much.

That's exactly my point. If you can use instant replays to call penalties, then how do you decide what plays can and can't be reviewed? Illegal participation is no different than lining up in the neutral zone or whether a face mask should be 5 or 15 yards. There's no logical reason one is reviewable and one isn't.

Good point. No one ever said the NFL or NCAAF (especially NCAAF) was logical. They just do what ever they want to.

After watching the play, it appears that Jesse's thumb probably touched the ball.  Its certainly not conclusive, but I can see why they called it they way they did.

I've seen it at least 40 times, and I don't see his hands ever coming within 6 inches of the ball. My brother watching with me concurs. I would say that its pretty conclusive that he didn't touch it, but thats just me.

Well, luckily for all involved it doesn't matter anymore.  If I was the refs I wouldn't have reversed the call, but I do see where they may've thought there was contact.

My coaches always told me when I played, if you lose a game and have to blame it on a refs call, or a cheap shot etc. than you didn't play your best game and deserved to lose. Texas didn't allow that possible bad call to affect them and came out and won big. So your right, it really doesn't matter.

6 inches? That's quite a stretch. I don't think he touched it either, but I think it was REALLY close.
