Warren Sapp on Al Davis

Contrary to Popular Belief, Al Davis Still Has A Plan and In Control
by CriticalFanatic

I'm not sure if Warren Sapp should be the authority on what's going on inside the Oakland Raiders front office, but it appears he still spends some time with Al Davis - and/or what's left him.

Sapp was on Dan Patrick's Radio Show Friday morning and was asked if Davis was still in charge:
“Fully. When I went there a few months ago, no doubt about it. Sitting there, talking with him about my plans, right before the last game of the year, watching Randy Moss and Tom Brady go get a 16-0 record. He had a big-screen TV, and we were there watching it,” Sapp said. “He’s definitely in full control. Don’t kid yourself because you see the man in a walker. There’s nothing wrong with his brain.”
I have a TV, not necessarily a big screen, but I do watch it quite often. Am I charge?

In regards to the "brain" comment, I might beg to differ considering the money he dropped during the offseason.

When asked about Randy Moss, Sapp changed his tune and blaming straight take a play off, homey:
“Tom Walsh was the offensive coordinator, he hadn’t called a play in this league in 12 years,” Sapp said. “You know your job would change, and we know the NFL has evolved into something totally different. We didn’t even have a three-step drop. C’mon, you know this game is timing, putting the ball in your great athletes’ hands and letting them work. It was crazy to watch the man get done like that and make those comments about him.”
Patrick then asked if that was mostly Davis' fault, since he was, you know, "in charge":
“Al Davis is in charge, but Al Davis don’t wake up until we’re halfway through practice,” Sapp said. “He’s on different hours. Al Davis is on Al Davis time.”
So I guess the question that needs to be asked is whether Sapp is telling the truth, or if he's just putting in a good word for someone that was good to him.

I'm going to go with the latter. Nothing that has happened in the Raiders organization has made any semblance of sense in the last few years.

Just in the last couple years:
- Failed to understand the landscape of a No. 1 draft pick and didn't get JaMarcus Russell into camp.
- Overpaid for Javon Walker.
- Overpaid for DeAngelo Hall.
- Hired a coach who had no previous experience outside of a college coordinator.
The list could go on. Oakland will "just win, baby," when Al Davis moves on.

The Raiders were great in the 1970's to the mid 80's. Except for the Super Bowl run against the Bucs in 2002- '03, they are the epitome of mediocrity. Al Davis has been a 'legend in his own mind' for many years, whether in good health or bad.
