Orlando Summer League: Michael Beasley and Derrick Rose Face Each Other In Game One

Let The Overreaction Summer Leagues Begin
by CriticalFanatic
7/7/08

Last summer I took in my first summer league action out in Las Vegas, an experience I encourage anyone to take part in. All players, coaches and league officials are very approachable and you get to see some fairly decent basketball up close and personal.

It's great experience for the rookies and younger players in helping them get to know their new teammates, and occasionally a free agent summer pick-up may solidify a final roster spot with a good performance. Aside from that, the games aren't exactly a great barometer of what to expect his upcoming season.

Just like last year's Vegas league where Kevin Durant and Greg Oden were present, you can expect everyone to overreact to every single play made by this year's No. 1 and 2, Derrick Rose and Michael Beasley.

The two faced of Monday afternoon in Orlando, and needless to say, Beasley got the better of his counterpart, by a long shot. Miami's rookie scored 28 points (the first bucket above) in 23 minutes and hauled down 9 rebounds.

Derrick Rose was less impressive, and to be expected from someone that now has to quarterback a new team with a new coach. The Bulls rook scored just 10 points and has four assists to five turnovers.

Let the ridiculous mistake of a first pick chatter begin. You can expect the some of the pathetic sports fans that inhabit my hometown to have already ruled this a bust.

Don't worry though, it wasn't all highlights for Beasley. Check out this big Cedric Simmons block of a Beasley dunk attempt.

This evening, we had a great discussion on Twitter about what summer league ultimately means. The consensus was you can't really tell how good a player will be until the regular season, but summer league is a step-above college competition. Plus, you get a taste of how they fit with their team's system.

I'm a big fan of the NBA Summer League....It's a crucial element to a young NBA player's development in the league. Most of these young guys are used to playing "Year-Round" Basketball in HS and NCAA. If you want a "Scholarship" or that last "NBA Roster Spot", then you have to develop your game during the summer...No doubt about it! But I agree, let's not start talking MeLo and LeBron again just yet.
