Myers aims to pitch Phils out of slump in Chicago |
(Sports Network) - Philadelphia Phillies starter Brett Myers faces what could be his toughest opponent since his return from the minors, as he squares off against the team with the best record in baseball, the Chicago Cubs, in the continuation of a four-game series this afternoon at Wrigley Field.
Myers, the Phillies Opening Day starter, suffered through a miserable first part of the season that led to his demotion to the minors to work out of his slump. However, in seven starts since his return, the right-hander is 4-1 with a 1.66 earned run average and enters this start riding a 16-game scoreless innings streak.
Myers' run began with a nine-hit shutout of Washington on August 20 and was followed by seven scoreless innings of work in a win over the Dodgers on Monday that pushed his season record to 7-10 with a 4.49 ERA.
Both of those outings came at home, though, and Myers is just 1-7 with a 6.35 ERA in 13 road starts this year.
Myers' first-half struggle did not show in an April 11 encounter with the Cubs, as the 28-year-old picked up a win on that day with eight innings of three-run, five-hit ball. Lifetime, Myers is 6-3 with a save and a 2.63 ERA in 12 games, eight starts against Chicago.
Myers will try to halt Philadelphia's three-game skid today while trying to end the Cubs' seven-game win streak. Chicago's burst includes wins in the first two contests of this series, as the club captured Friday's game by a 3-2 account.
Alfonso Soriano's seventh-inning homer off Clay Condrey proved to be the difference, while Kosuke Fukudome and Daryle Ward each drove in a run to extend the Cubs' longest win streak since they won nine straight from May 26- June 3.
Chicago has held its opponents to three runs or less in five games during its winning run while extending both the best record in baseball (85-50) as well as the top home mark (51-19). More importantly, the Cubs are also 6 1/2 games up on Milwaukee for first place in the National League Central.
Pat Burrell had two hits and knocked in a run for Philadelphia, which has watched its bullpen blow leads in three straight games while falling two games back of first-place New York in the NL East. Chase Utley scored both runs for the Phillies.
Philadelphia will try to rough up Chicago starter Ted Lilly for a second time this year. The club managed five runs and seven hits off Lilly in an April 12 outing that saw the lefty take the loss after 4 1/3 innings of work.
Lilly, 1-2 with a 5.19 ERA in three career starts against the Phils, is 4-1 over his last eight starts, though, and defeated Pittsburgh on Monday. He allowed three runs on seven hits over seven frames, also striking out seven.
The 32-year-old is 13-7 with a 4.23 ERA this season.
The Phillies took two of three games from Chicago in Philadelphia back in April and are 15-10 against the Cubs since the start of the 2005 campaign.
