Yankees promote OF Cabrera |
St. Petersburg, FL (Sports Network) - The New York Yankees recalled outfielder Melky Cabrera from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Thursday due to the injury concerns of Bobby Abreu.
Abreu injured his left wrist sliding into second base on Wednesday and did not participate in the Yankees' 7-5 loss to the Rays on Thursday. Though X-rays of the wrist came back negative, Abreu's status for New York's weekend series against Seattle remains in question.
Cabrera has struggled terribly at the plate with the big club this season, as the 24-year-old Dominican Republic native hit .242 with eight homers and 36 RBI in 117 games. Since being optioned on August 15, however, Cabrera batted .333 with five RBI for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
