Hummel, Purdue crush Eastern Michigan |
West Lafayette, IN (Sports Network) - Robbie Hummel netted a game-high 18 points, and the Purdue Boilermakers routed the Eastern Michigan Eagles, 87-58, in the opening round of the NIT Season Tip-Off from Mackey Arena.
Hummel hit a trio of three-pointers and doled out four assists, while E'Twaun Moore had 17 points, five rebounds and four assists for 11th-ranked Purdue (2-0), which scored a season-opening 82-50 victory over Detroit on Friday.
The Boilermakers' defense, which in their first game forced 20 turnovers and held Detroit to a dismal 32.7 percent shooting effort, again showed their tenacity forcing 22 EMU turnovers while holding the Eagles to 39 percent shooting.
Purdue will next take on either Georgia or Loyola-Chicago, as those schools will tangle later Monday in first-round action in the north regionals.
Justin Dobbins logged 16 points, and Brandon Bowdry scored 15 and pulled down six boards for EMU (1-1), which rolled to victory in its season opener on Friday, blasting little-known Marygrove 119-48. The 71-point margin of victory set a new school record, shattering the previous mark of 59.
Solomon Farris hauled down a game-high 10 rebounds with six points for the Eagles, who shot just 21.4 percent (3-of-14) from three-point range and an inexcusable 47.4 percent (9-of-19) from the free throw line.
EMU started the game on an 8-0 run, but that lead quickly vanished as Purdue opened up a 16-2 run and pulled away before settling on a 20-point halftime lead.
A three-ball by Hummell seven minutes into the second half made it a 32-point margin, 67-35, and the Boilermakers were able to cruise to victory from there.
