Young, Panthers knock out Red Raiders |
Newark, NJ (Sports Network) - Sam Young scored 24 points and pulled down eight rebounds to pace fourth-ranked Pittsburgh to an 80-67 triumph over Texas Tech in semifinal action of the Legends Classic at the Prudential Center.
DeJuan Blair tallied 15 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for the Panthers (6-0), who advanced to play Washington State in the championship game on Saturday. The Cougars beat Mississippi State, 63-52, in the other semifinal.
"It's a great opportunity, a great event," said Pittsburgh coach Jamie Dixon. "We could have done some things better, but that's why we're in November and we can improve."
Gilbert Brown ended with 10 points and eight rebounds for Pittsburgh, which led by 10 at the half and then shot 51.5 percent over the final 20 minutes. The Panthers also held a decided 49-31 advantage in rebounds.
Trevor Cook had 24 points and five rebounds for the Red Raiders (5-1), who also got 15 points from Mike Singletary. Alan Voskuil scored nine to go with eight rebounds.
John Roberson's three-pointer gave Texas Tech a 27-24 lead with 4:34 remaining in the opening half, but Pittsburgh netted the final 13 of the period. Jermaine Dixon's layup capped the burst.
Cook's three-ball had Texas Tech within 41-38 with 14:50 remaining, but Brown countered with a shot from beyond the arc and Blair followed with a three- point play.
A Voskuil three-pointer had the Red Raiders within 49-43 with just under 12 minutes left, but Texas Tech got no closer. Brad Wanamaker's three-point play expanded the margin to 65-51 with 7:21 to go.
"We came out with more intensity in the second half," said Blair. "We tried to take the first five minutes and make that our game."
Game Notes
Roberson had seven points and eight assists...This was the first meeting between the schools...Blair returned after missing the last game with knee inflammation.
