Paterno has successful hip replacement surgery

University Park, PA (Sports Network) - Penn State head football coach Joe Paterno underwent successful hip replacement surgery on Sunday at Mount Nittany Medical Center.

Paterno has been coaching from the press box for a majority of the season after injuring his hip attempting an onside kick in practice. Dr. Wayne Sebastianelli reported that Paterno is resting comfortably in the hospital.

The 81-year-old is expected to be able to walk around again on Monday and is expected to resume his normal coaching duties on December 1, when the team returns from its Thanksgiving break.

The Nittany Lions just finished off their third Big Ten championship with a win over Michigan State on Saturday. With an 11-1 record overall, Penn State has earned a trip to a BCS Bowl in January. Paterno said after the game that he plans on coming back in 2009 despite his health problems.
